569 movies came out in 2024. Assuming most movies have around a two hour running time, it would take 47.42 days of nonstop viewing to finish all of them. Then factor in the thousands of movies that came out before 2024. After that we can add in television, novels, video games, comics, internet videos. One can spend every waking hour consuming media and not make a dent. Attempting to drink the ocean is not good for your health.
Fiction isn’t solely a matter of taste. There is bad fiction out there.
Fiction that promotes harm?
Fiction that rips off better material?
Fiction that wastes your time for the sole purpose of making a buck?
— that’s bad fiction. Seeing as one can spend several lifetimes trying to catch up on it all. it’s important to filter out the bad fiction. It’s important to curate.
That’s what we’re here for. To separate the good from the bad and extract the important ideas from good fiction. Reasonable people can disagree what that entails and that’s where the fun comes from. Communities can be built around these conversations.
But to proceed, we must agree that artists owe their audiences the duty to act in good faith. Otherwise the ocean gets deeper and the good gets harder to find.
